1915-1991
Der 1915 in Aberdeen (USA) geborene Maler und Kunstschriftsteller studierte an verschiedenen Universitaeten in Amerika Philosophie, Kunstgeschichte und Archaeologie.
Angeregt von Matta und dessen Automatismus sowie den in New York im Exil lebenden europaeischen Surrealisten, wandte er sich 1940 der Malerei zu. Von 1944 bis 1951 gab er die in den USA sehr einflussreiche kunsttheoretische Reihe "Documents of Modern Art" heraus und gruendete 1948 zusammen mit Baziotes, Rothko und Newman die Kunstschule "Subjects of the Artists", die zu einem Treffpunkt der Avantgarde wurde.
Motherwells expressive, mit grosszuegigem Pinselstrich gemalte Action Painting zaehlt zu den bedeutendsten Leistungen des Abstrakten Expressionismus.
